Quoting from the van: why the same-day quote wins work the careful one loses
Ask a customer why they chose a trade and “they got back to me first” comes up as often as price. The quote written on Sunday evening, carefully, is frequently the third one to arrive — and third is a bad place to be.
Why speed beats polish here
A customer who has asked three trades for a price is, at that moment, uncertain and slightly anxious. The first credible quote resolves that. It becomes the reference point every later quote is judged against, and the trade who sent it has demonstrated the thing the customer is most worried about: that you will actually turn up and do what you said.
None of this means quote carelessly. It means the gap between “I have seen the job” and “you have a price” is itself part of what you are being judged on.
The real reason quotes wait until Sunday
Not laziness — friction. Quoting properly has meant sitting at a computer, opening a document, typing the description again, formatting it, exporting a PDF and attaching it to an email. That is twenty minutes of the wrong kind of work after a day of the right kind, so it gets batched to the weekend, and by the weekend the details have blurred.
What has to change for same-day to be realistic
- Capture at the moment of the visit. While you are still in the van outside, when the scope is fresh and the customer’s words are still in your head.
- Dictate, do not type. Describing a job out loud takes a minute; typing it takes ten and reads worse.
- Let the format be automatic. A consistent branded PDF is better than a bespoke one, and it removes the decision that causes the delay.
- Send from where you are. If sending requires getting home, it will not happen today.
The follow-on benefit
Same-day quoting also fixes the record-keeping problem underneath it. A quote created on site exists; a quote you meant to write does not, and neither does any trace of the job you did not win. Over a year that is the difference between knowing your conversion rate and guessing at it.
The caveat worth stating
Some jobs genuinely cannot be priced same-day — anything needing supplier quotes, a structural opinion or a site survey. For those, send the same-day message anyway: what you have understood, what you need to price it, and when the number will land. That still beats silence, and it still arrives first.
